SHERATON SAN DIEGO HOTEL & MARINA HONORED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS WITH GOOD EARTHKEEPING AWARD
San Diego's most sustainable hotel becomes the largest hotel to be recognized as the most distinguished, environmentally sustainable lodging property in California
SAN DIEGO, CA (December 1, 2011) - The Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina (Sheraton) and its staff were honored yesterday as a recipient of the California Hotel and Lodging Association's (CH&LA) Good Earthkeeping Award 2011 for the hotel's newly implemented food waste recycling program. The most sustainable hotel in San Diego is now the largest hotel in the entire state to receive this honor, which recognizes the Sheraton's on-going eco-conscious efforts and commitment to sustainability.
"We are extremely thankful to have been awarded this honor for our green efforts," said Scott Hermes, General Manager of the Sheraton. "We've made major strides this year toward operating as a zero waste facility, and being recognized as an industry leader throughout the state for continually upping the anti and adopting new sustainable practices is something we're really proud of."
The CH&LA Good Earthkeeping Award recognizes lodging properties that have developed a high standard toward integrating environmental practices and demonstrating success in energy conservation, solid waste reduction, effluents and emissions, water conservation, purchasing and/or business issues. Having just implemented a comprehensive recycling program this summer, the Sheraton was a perfect honoree for this award.
With a commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, the Sheraton partnered with Waste Management of San Diego in June 2011 to execute a food waste recycling program that diverts almost 100 percent of the hotels food and waste and captures the majority of recyclable products from its waste stream. In just two months after the program launched, the Sheraton was able to increase its diversion rate from 15% to 80% and will ultimately displace more than 300 tons of food from landfills in just one year.
A major factor of this new food recycling program is the Sheraton's ability to successfully pull-off zero waste meetings and cater to a new market of meeting and event guests.
The Sheraton San Diego is the largest green hotel in Southern California and has long been recognized for its commitment to eco-friendly practices and sustainability. In 2009, the hotel received the Two Palm Leadership Level in California's Green Lodging Program, the highest level attainable. The hotel then went on to achieve certification at the Gold Level by Green Seal in 2010. The Sheraton San Diego also uses Fuel Cell Power Technology to provide the hotel its energy, energy efficient lighting system, water conserving fixtures, climate control systems and more.
The CH&LA's national affiliate, the American Hotel & Lodging Association created the Stars of the Industry Good Earthkeeping award more than 40 years ago to recognize outstanding accomplishments in the lodging industry. The award was presented at the 2011 CH&LA Annual Members and Stars of the Industry Luncheon on November 30th at the Balboa Bay Resort & Club in Newport Beach.
